I have to disagree with the viewpoint that the Book of Jonah was “satire.” Jesus Himself verified that Jonah was a real person, who really existed, and really was inside the belly of a fish for three days and nights, according to Matthew 12: 38-41. I only listened to the first 16 minutes or so, and I do not know if you covered the Matthew passage in your sermon.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Mike.
I’d go back and listen to the rest of the sermon- I think you missed a lot by flipping it off early.
A lot of what we do here at Revolution is “theorize” in an attempt to get a richer understanding of the Bible. Pastor Jay and Reverend Vince never claim that they know for sure which parts of the Bible are literal and which parts are figurative; by looking at the story of Jonah both ways, one can glean lessons that would be missed if only looking at it one way. Much of the Bible is like that, and we believe that God meant for it to be that way.
We’re glad you took a few minutes out of your day to hear what we had to say, even if you still disagree with us. Thanks again!
A satirical interpretation of the book of Jonah wouldn’t necessarily preclude Christ from quoting the story. If Christ were here today, he would probably reference our comedies as well… I can imagine Him referencing cult classics such Office Space or well known urban legends that would resonate with a 21st century audience.
