Reminder: Film Screening Tomorrow Night!

Revolution NYC proudly presents the rousing documentary THE GARDEN, written and directed by Scott Hamilton Kennedy, as the sixth film in its successful screening series, Film Revolution. THE GARDEN will screen Tuesday, November 17 @ 8:00 PM at Legion bar in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (790 Metropolitan Avenue @ Humboldt). A donation of $10 qualifies for raffle prizes, with proceeds benefiting the Open Space Alliance of North Brooklyn (OSA). Additional raffles tickets are available for $5 each. Revolution’s own Rev. Vince Anderson will provide post-screening tunes. Representatives from OSA will be in attendance to speak with audience members about volunteer opportunities.

The Garden is an engaging and powerful look at the famous political and social battle over the largest community garden in the U.S (located in south central Los Angeles). A follow-up to Kennedy’s award-winning documentary, OT: Our Town, the film shows how the politics of power and greed (backroom deals, land developing, green politics, money) tragically intersect with working class families who rely on this communal garden for their livelihood. Equal parts “The Wire” and Harlan County, USA, The Garden, exposes the fault lines in American society and raises crucial and challenging questions about liberty, equality, and justice for the poorest and most vulnerable among us. Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times said: “It’s tempting to call “The Garden” a story of innocence and experience, of evil corrupting paradise, but that would be doing a disservice to the fascinating complexities of a classic Los Angeles conflict and an excellent documentary that does them full justice.” The Garden earned the Grand Jury Award at the 2008 Silverdocs Documentary Film Fest as well as a nomination for the 2008 Academy Award® in the “Best Documentary, Features” categories.

The Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn, fondly known as OSA, is a not-for-profit greening North Brooklyn, by improving our existing parks and helping to develop new parks. This is accomplished by raising funds, linking community volunteers and working in partnership with the New York City Parks Department.
