It’s strange but I listened to this podcast out of sequence. I listened to it today, this being my grandfather’s 96th birthday. He is in the hospital today and my father was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer; both relationships are a bit strained and now that they are sick, I feel some strange obligation to be there although it puts a strain on me emotionally and even financially by not having a vehicle.
They have both done things that were offensive in the past which have since been put to rest and peace and yet still, I have kept my personal life and person at a little distance for the safety of my emotional well being. Of course this has affected the dynamics of the rest of my relation to my family as to how close I allow certain members to be.
This has caused me significant stress over the roles in a family and an overwhelming sense guilt and confusion over what I think is my duty or obligation to them as a daughter, granddaughter, and sister. This has caused so much pain and indecision in my life and though I’m aware of it and have done much to stay aware and act against those “duties” for the sake of my wellbeing, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for reminding me/us of our worth beyond roles, categories, and definitions. I believe Jesus freed us from such oppressive obligations and from putting expectations upon ourselves and others, or feeling less than good enough when we aren’t able to fulfill those roles or those roles were not filled by our immediate family members. I have found that friends and communities are provided by God to fill such gaps in our lives. Bless you.
